Reseachers predict larger-than-average Gulf 'dead zone'; Impact of oil spill unclear

ScienceDaily (2010-06-28) -- Researchers say this year's Gulf of Mexico "dead zone" is expected to be larger than average, continuing a decades-long trend that threatens the health of a $659 million fishery. The 2010 forecast, released by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), calls for a Gulf dead zone of between 6,500 and 7,800 square miles, an area roughly the size of Lake Ontario.

New research sheds light on Antarctica's melting Pine Island Glacier

Thinning ice in West Antarctica is currently contributing nearly 10 per cent of global sea level rise, and scientists have identified Pine Island Glacier as a major source.

Tracking CO2 -- Biogeochemists Map Out Carbon Dioxide Emissions In The U.S.

ScienceDaily () -- Biogeochemists located where the most carbon dioxide emissions occur in the U.S. using a new mapping system. With this program-available to anyone on the Web-researchers were able to extract information about carbon dioxide emissions by transforming data on local air pollution and combining it with geographic information systems (GIS) data to layer the emissions onto infrastructures at the Earth's surface. The map helps us learn more about carbon emissions and gives scientists a way to check the accuracy of satellite images.
